Default How does the car recognize ECU versions?

What I mean is, if you put a chip (your favorite here) in an ECU board, does the ECU version matter to the car?
For example, an "A box" ECU gets chipped. What keeps that chipped ECU from working in another "box version" car.

Default Different boxes have physically different codes <more>

Production changes in the car require changes in the ECU code.
