Default Use a vacuum pump to verify that the diaphragm opens. Or just push it up with your finger and cover

the vac nipple with your thumb. Make sure it holds open until you remove your thumb.

Default Push on the diaphragm and then put your hand over the opposite opening. Can you hold the diaphragm

with the suction you made. Pull your hand off does it release? If you can't hold it in place with the vacuum you developed then it may have a leak in the rubber diaphragm.
