OK, I'm a newb yes...
I've used 'search' and while it has directed me to some fun knowledge about S4's, I haven't found the answer to my question.
I want to buy and S4 but I don't have the 10k required for a nice one, so I have to find crappy ones in the 5 - 7k range and fix blown turbos.
I am mechanically proficient. I've always had 'hot rod' cars but never something like an s4. I've done tranny replacements, motor rebuilds, etc, on several imports.
Do you REALLY have to pull the motor from the S4 to replace a blown turbo? If so, I've already found the write up for it. But what is necessary for swapping to ko4s? It seems like if you are in there, might as well swap to them them.
I live 3 miles from ECS so tuning isn't a big concern for me.

Hey man - Welcome.
I just asked the same question a few days ago in this thread:

Maybe that will answer some of your questions too.

Oh, and yes you will have to pull the engine. There are some tried and tested kits out there, and everyone has their own opinion as to which is the best. I'm going with turbos from JH motorsports and the fueling kit from awe-tuning. You can also put Garrett turbos on this engine if you have the $$$.
Here are some links:

and I just learned about this one through the forums:

u can pull the heads and do the turbos in the car, its easier if youre doing it in the garage in my opinion but some say its easier to pull the engine. i guess it all depends on the equipment u have.
