Default How to make sure my front brake pads are installed properly......

Before I take my car into the shop yet again to have the clunking issue in my front end resolved, I wanted to check my brake pads myself to see if that has been the issue all of this time. I have never installed brake pads before however, and so I do not know what to look for. My brakes work exceptionally, so I don't know if right there I can conclude they are seated properly, but is there anything I can quickly check or look for that would tell me for sure?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Default There is really nothing to screw up.

If the caliper bolts (behind the caliper) are loose, the caliper could be rattling around. That's dangerous, and you want to torque those bolts to spec ASAP.

The pads should seat properly...and once they do, the wire retainer swings into place over the top, and you lock it down. If the pads aren't seated properly within the caliper, I don't think the retain would lock down, and you'd know because it would be flapping around rather than being anchored to the back of the caliper.

Refer to the brake article in the tech section. It might be under the A6 or S4 section, since they both shared the same caliper at some point. That should familiarize you with a brake pad change.

I take it sub frame bolt tightening didn't help.

Default I haven't done anything yet because a) I am extremely busy and b) I don't know how......

I need to find out where the sub frame bolts are before I can do that. I already know where the steering rack bolts are I think, and that is another one of the things on the "to-do before I give it to the shop" list haha.

I haven't done anything as of yet, and now I have my coolant leak issue, so I have to look at the heat converter now and check the hoses and then give the car to a shop for that too.

I just want to have a list of things I need the shop to do before I bring it in as I am extremely busy and am growing very tired of all these problems that keep happening that nobody seems to be able to fix. I had 3 mechanics look at my clunking issue and none of them can find the issue so I think, much to my dismay, the next trip may be to the Dealer.

I will let you all know the solutions to all of my problems as soon as I do.
