How much HP can the S4 tranny (6 Spd) reliably handle?
Everybody is chipping and modding away, and with my previous car ( a 400HP Mitsu Galant VR4) I used to go through trannies like I change oil. First gear just couldn't handle the added HP/torque. What is the difference between our unit and the RS4?

the Manual can handle 625 HP and 800 lb-ft of torque.
the Tip can handle 308 HP and 310 lb-ft of torque.
go 6 speeds!

Getrag says otherwise...

I spoke with both Getrag and Audi about this... They are spec'd for 440Nm
withouth any problems. However, they said, there is CONSIDERABLE headroom on these trannys I couldn't get them to tell me how much (for obvious reasons), but they kept saying "considerable". So, if we guess a few percentages...
(let's assume 325ft-lb as a base - the math is easier, and it's close enuf (440Nm = 324.5 ft-lb ))
20% = 390
30% = 422
40% = 455
50% = 488
And as we know, the RS4 has the *EXACT SAME TRANNY* (well, 2 gear ratios are different, but the rest of the transmission is identical). There are plenty of tuned RS4's outside the states, and I have yet to hear reports of an exploded tranny.
I'm inclined to believe they can withstand 500lb-ft or more before they start to have issues.
