Default How to troubleshoot bad wheel bearing when you have really noisy tires?

Any advice how to go about doing this?

How many hours of labor I can expect shop to charge me for front or rear wheel bearing replacement?

Thanks
D

Default bad wheel bearing typically change sounds with changes in load...you can usually make the sound....

disappear when swerving one way or the other.

Default from a non-mechanical standpoint...

i recently just had a bad wheel bearing

it was a rear one. one day, when you accelerated, a loud, almost "grinding" noise happened. at first, i thought it was my exhuast?

it got much louder and became annoying. IMHO you should be able to hear it even with loud tires (my tires are fairly loud too)

chime in if i'm wrong/missing anything

(bad wheel bearings seem to be a common these cars, mine went around 60k miles, my grandpa in his 80s who babies his s4 had his go around 45k) - good luck

Default well I have grinding you describe when I am stoping the car

especially if I am bringing it to a slow stop with light brake aplication. this grinding can be felt frough steering wheel as well.

First I thought it was the brakes but it is present even when car rolls slowly without brake aplication.

This makes me think I have a bad wheel bearing in front. From what I can tell by sound it comes from passenger side.

When I make a sharper left turn(loading pass side) noise increses.

What do you guys think?

Default Put car on lift. Lift. Put car in gear. Wih wheels spinning in the air..

use a mechanics stethiscope to see if any bearing is louder than the others.

Default the pitch of the sound does change when I unload pass side (ie turn the other way)

but tires are so noisy that they mask most of the change..

Default Jack up the wheel in question...tug at the wheel.

If the bearing is bad, you'll feel a little play in the wheel as you tug at it.

That could be TRE or control arms also, not just the bearing.
