Default Hydroplaning with quattro

Interesting experience last night. I'm comming home from work at about 2am, and it had been raining a little, so the pavement was wet. I come up to a rotary (LaJ and Old Cutler, if anyone cares) at about 50 or so, and the car slid to the outside like it was on ICE. I mean no traction, no squeeling, just straight line. I let off the gas and had enough room to recover, but the ESP was going nuts, and I thought the quattro would save me from things like that. Roomate suggest that I was hydroplaning, which even quattro can't stop...but there was no standing water. I guess I shouldn't take rotaries that fast, but does anybody have any guesses as to what happened?

Are your tires OK? Are you running summer tires in cold weather?

Default Quattro will not save you if your car is hydroplaning.

Light rains are dangerous because it will bring the oils in the road to the surface and not wash it away.

Default The only thing that would help a car going sideways in that situation is...

an anchor. Quattro gets you moving forward. Brakes, APS or otherwise, stop the car from moving forward. If you lose lateral traction, technology isn't going to help you out much. ESP might be able to prevent you from losing traction by sensing it before it happens. But, once you are hydroplaning, you need to steer the car to correct for the skid and hope the front wheels grip and then bring the back wheels around.
