Re: was there any other cars you were considering?
Well, my criteria were fairly stringent in terms of performance and practicality. There weren't too many choices.
Primarily I wanted:
-Low to mid 5 sec 0 to 60
-AWD
-superior handling
-four doors
-reliability or at least a warranty
-priced less than $35K
Up until recently I had all of the above with the S4. When my aftermarket warranty turned out to be a lemon, I decided that I really couldn't afford to shell out the beans necessary to maintain the vehicle if the turbos or transmission went.
So where did that leave me for choices? The Evo, Scubie STi & VW R32 (if you can get one). Is there anyone I missed?
I really didn't want to spend more than $35K so that left out the new S4 and Volvo S60R. From a personal taste standpoint I really couldn't rally (no pun intended) behind the huge hood scoop on the Scubie, nor the wing. The R32 seems unobtainable at the moment. With the smaller GT style spoiler, the Evo fit the bill.
I agonized over the step down in terms of comfort and appointments that I'd be losing by leaving the S4. I really had to rationalize by considering what I'd be gaining in terms of out of the box performance. To get my old S4 where the Evo stands now I'd have to spend about $4K to $5K to upgrade to coil overs, big brakes and downpipes.
