I have been running Motul 8100 E-Tech 0W40 for the last 2 years but is it overkill?

Oil changes are pretty expensive using what is Motul's top grade oil and I would like to keep costs down on the car.

This is kind of a stupid question but will I be safe going to Mobil 1 OW40? There doesn't seem to be any kind of European blend here in Toronto, just regular 0W40.

Default M1 0w-40 is the preferred M1 for the B5 S4, European Blend is simply a marketing slogan. No way is

it as good as the Motul, but how long will you be leaving it in there? I choose to run mostly M1 0w-40, but I change it every 3 - 3.5k miles. I would rather run slightly cheaper oil and change it more often than run better quality oil but leave it in there a long time. Never did a calculation regarding the cost effectiveness of my practices.

Default I usually leave the Motul in for around 8-9000 kms (5-5600 miles).

A good friend was the Motul rep here for several years and honestly claimed it can go much further than that. He has a modded S4 as well.

Default Might also consider sending a sample to Blackstone to assess how your oil is doing.

It might lead you to lengthen the interval between oil changes safely.

Default I would just run Mobil 1. I recently bought a case of Amsoil and wanted to compare a Blackstone

sample of that with one of Mobil One. I'll post it when I get results, but I've seen Blackstone reports coming back for Mobil One saying people would be fine running that oil up to 7 or 8K miles. I think I'll stick with the cheap Mobil One and change it every 5K. I think the higher priced oils like Amsoil and Motul are overkill if you change your oil routinely.

IMO M1 5w40 Delvac 1 / T&TD is much better suited for turbos than M1 0w40.

Default Bruno, why don't you just use the Motul 8100 X-cess 5W40 the rest of us are using?

There's a lot of people who use it including myself, and there haven't been any complaints. Even for the winter months.
