i just noticed the dealer never gave me my stereo code

When they replaced mine I never got the code....almost a year after that my battery was drained...
I had to reset the code, but only had the old code. I called them and the new code was on the work order in their system...one phone call and I was ready to roll with the new code.

Can someone explain to me the significance of this stereo code? I've seen it...
on my dealer service invoices but I have no idea what it's for. Does it get affected by VAG-COM use?

if the stereo asks for a code it is in safe mode
its meant so someone cant steal your stereo and put it in another car. i want to know what triggers it, and how to find out my code.
