While racing a buddy of mine in his STI. we were doing a rolling start from first and it happened while shifting into third from second. Just wouldn't go into third, so I coasted to a stop and it didn't budge into the low gears. I did take off the shifter plate and look at my short shifter and all looks fine and everything was tight.
Transmisson fried right? BTW car is under warranty, so I will be putting old shifter back in before I take it in to the dealer. Just to be on the safe side, I don't want my SS to be the "cause" of anything in there crazy minds.

I just replaced the 1st and 2nd gears and got the RS4 clutch and flywheel while it was all apart. My car wasn't under warrantee though. It would be great if they fixed it for free.
Definitely take out the short shifter. Even though it had nothing to do with the problem, they'll still blame it

---> and tried to jam it into first instead. It mushroomed the engagement tips of the slider. Depending on how brutal your missed shift was, you may recover. Here's how:
1. With engine off, clutch depressed, try to get it into first or second gear by repeatedly pushing harder and harder (don't break or bend anything). Do this again and again, depressing the clutch anew for every attempt, and continue if there seems to be even the slightest progress. This works on the mushroomed slider tips, and eventually the gear may engage with effort.
2. If the first step is successful, repeating it many times should reduce the effort.
3. Exercise 1 - 2 shifts a lot, whenever stopped. Eventually the effort may return to normal.
Anyway, this was my experience. I hate to have any dealer do surgery on my car. You never know what shortcuts they take. Good luck.
