He was definitely trying .. It's totally normal for an S4 to beat them up top.

their 5th gear sucks.

up till 4th the evo would have won.

around 95ish and up the evo suddenly has little left.

Default Wow. I didn't realize they wimped out so dramatically up top. I've only seen them down low...

Why is it that the Japanese 4-banger turbos (modded WRXs, Evo8s, etc.) do so poorly up top? Gearing? Seems like their dynos are impressive and have no worse power/tq in high rpms than the S4.

Default Ironically, the VW 1.8Ts do quite well up top (chip or Stg.3) for a 4-cylinder...

The Japanese cars suffer from the driveline loss of AWD coupled with inefficient gearing (?).

I can confirm that .. My friend's 2002 1.8T Jetta is VERY impressive up top.

Default Thats news to me. The stage 3- S4 never noted my tail lights becoming bigger again...

over 100 mph But then again, I don't really race into 5th gear, it gets a bit too crazy for me. The Evo is geared almost EXACTLY like my A4 was and I find it accelerates VERY well over 100 mph, in fact it pulls over 100 mph much harder than the stage 3 did.

A stock evo, I would probably give you that. The car runs low 9's air/fuel wise above 5k rpms and the boost also tapers to ~16psi in those sustained rpm ranges @ WOT in 5th.

the evo i ran belongs to "antisocial" who is on these forums.

back when i ran him, i believe he had his greddy afc,
an aftermarket turbo back, and some other little goodies.

i had k04's with piggie pipes, a custom intake and abt's k03 program.

so basically, a lightly modded evo vs a stage II+ S4

it was dead even until about 100mph, after which
it seemed like the evo had let off - except he hadn't.

his car is now at over 360whp, and would smack
the **** out of almost any s4 -- and the evo is still on
the stock turbo -- so I think it's safe to say
I know & respect the capabilities of an Evo.

however, i'm pretty sure "antisocial" still has
the same 5th gear - and you can ask him what he has to say.
