Default Icelink mounted in glovebox - pics, impressions, and tips inside

I wanted to clean up the look of my interior a bit. Here's what the icelink looked like installed in its intended location

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/78120/img_0802.jpg">

I figured there were two possible concealed locations for install: glovebox or center console.

Center console would have been a pita for wire routing and is more difficult to access, imo (i always feel like I'm throwing my arm out of socket reaching back to lower the armrest and open the lid). Also, the icelink would have taken up most of the useful space in that compartment - not something I wanted.

Glovebox mounting would make for simple wire routing, simple installation, would enable easy removal of the ipod, and would also enable convenient navigation/control of the ipod by a passenger. The driver shouldn't mess the ipod while driving, imo, so I am fine with it being relatively inaccessible to me.

Here is a pic of the glovebox mounting location:

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/78120/icelink_in_glovebox.jpg">

I attached an L-bracket to the proclip that the Icelink mounts to, and bent it to set the icelink at an appropriate angle. I then just drove a screw through the L-bracket into the bottom of the glovebox compartment.

Cons of this install:

1. One cannot see what song is playing and iPod mounting/removal taks 2 seconds longer =P

2. A very small hole is required to be drilled through the bottom of the glove-box interior.

3. When the glovebox is open, there is a single visible wire (one that looks like its coming from the top-left of iPod in pic)

4. Due to the mounting angle, when the glovebox is in the shut position the iPod sits nearly horizontal/flat in the mount. You need to ensure the iPod is mounted snugly (use supplied spacers or come up with something better) in the holder, else it will come loose when you hit large bumps or under heavy braking.

Tips for the archives:

- Obsessively test mounting angle and location with ipod installed in icelink before drilling anything or mounting the L-bracket. You'll kick yourself if you mount the thing and realize your glovebox won't shut or you can't get the ipod out/in the Icelink. There is very little clearance - think before you act!

- There is probably a much better method to go about mounting the icelink - I just wanted a quick and simple install w/ my available tools/hardware. The L-bracket is attached to the glovebox with only 1 screw - as I didn't have enough clearance to put in another without completely removing the glovebox (releasing the tabs on the side of the box will give you some additional working room - see fog-light mod tech article for instructions on releasing glove box). However, even with 1 snug screw, the mount is stable enough that it stays put when I carelessly shove/rip the ipod in/out of the mount.

- If you drive a screw through the bottom of the glovebox interior, make sure it isn't too long that it will puncture the other side! =x

Default I used to have a CD changer which I removed and sold. The wiring itself

does not need to be removed. The Icelink wiring harness is plug and play - very straightforward.
