I missed 2nd BAD last week and ground the gears hard. It's not actually the gears but the splined collars that engage the shaft that grind. The "gears" are always engaged in these tranny's (please flame-easy - I know my terminology is wrong but I'm doing my best to describe this).
The splines get metal burrs on the ends from the missed shift - and these burrs can wear off over time as you shift in and out of 1st and 2nd more. Each shift takes off some of the metal that's obstructing the smooth movement of the shifter.
One week ago, 1st and 2nd were very hard and nasty feeling to shift both in and out of. Now they're almost back to normal. Changing the gear oil to get the filings out is now the immediate order of business - and keeping fingers crossed after that.
