It does make a difference, though I'm not sure it was worth the three hours of aggravation and two trips to the hardware store. I use 5/16" nuts as Innovator suggested.
I followed the RS4.org instructions. A couple of notes:
1. When it says that the hex bolts may be tough to remove due to thread lock, they aren't kidding. I struggled with those for a while. They are on there TIGHT!
2. My UUC shifter showed a little wear at the pivot point and some metal filings were evident below the shifter assembly. I took the opportunity to grease it up as well as apply some grease to the ball pivot on the shifter rod.
3. Using grease to hold the spacers in place didn't work for me. I ended up using Scotch tape to tape the rear spacers to the shifter assembly, but I had enough room on the front ones to place the spacer with my hands and then carefully put the torx screw through it.
4. When they warn you about the opening behind the shifter area, pay attention! I lost one of the nut/washer pieces down there and had to go to the hardware store for a replacement. They didn't have exactly the same thing, so I ended up using a separate washer and nut.
Overall, shifting seems better, but it isn't a dramatic improvement over the unspaced UUC 40%. Reverse is easier to engage (though this may just be due to adjustments when tightening everything up) and moving through all of the gears seems slightly smoother. Attempt this mod only if you have plenty of time, A LOT of patience, and a spare car to make trips to the hardware store if necessary. An extra set of hands might help as well, though I managed it by myself.

the black plastic box around the assembly, too.
I think I am going back to 30%, this is a bit too hard, plus I am having trouble going into 1st & 3rd, doesn't matter how much I adjust the two hex screws.
