Default Interesting write-up on oil filters and K&N filters....

It is references motorcycles in the oil filter part, but breaking apart a car oil filter shows they are cardboard too .. The mobil 1 oil filters have metal ends on them -- Anyone know about the OEM? ... In any case, enjoy ..

Snick Snick

Default Very interesting - thanks - kinda what I suspected about air filters

Looks like paper is best. the idea of an oiled filter is to have more open pores for performance and "catch" dirt on the oiled surfaces. Guess that doesn't work. It also kills MAFs

Default it's handy that you can clean them...

in a racing situation, it's nice to be able to clean and oil the filter after every weekend.

Other than that I wouldn't use one on a street car personally.

Default Interesting. I remember the first time I looked closely at a K&N air filter...

and I thought to myself, "man, these pores are pretty large...doesn't seem like there's much in the way to prevent small particles/dirt from passing by." Maybe that's why the airflow is better.

Default remember, the oil is the ONLY thing filtering with a K&N...

you get better airflow if you under-oil and don't keep the filter oiled properly because it most certainly isn't filtering with a weak film of oil.

Default ?? How is a corrugated surface of compressed fiber

impregnated in oil, enclosed in a wire mesh, filtering only with oil? Sounds to me like you're biased against them.

Default the weave of the mesh simply holds the oil in suspension...

so creates a barrier to adhere to dust and dirt and trap it in the filter...this is why it has to be regularly cleaned and oiled...because the oil film gets "broken" by the bombardment of the particles and the oil loses it's ability to trap particles.

The actual weave of the mesh is WAAAAAAAAAY bigger than on a paper filter (which uses the density of the mesh to keep out dust).

It's a good system for applications like racing (as long as it's cleaned and oiled FREQUENTLY) but far from ideal in a street car environment and I bet 80% or more of the people who use a K&N don't keep it properly cleaned and oiled.
