here that has had a successful fix for this problem? I shouldn't have a problem getting my dealer to fix it -- but the service manager didn't have a clue as to the cause. Any help would be appreciated.

This is what fixed it for me. You may need to press this issue with your dealership, they'll initially want to give you the "within tolerances" song-and-dance.
The part number for the seat frame is 800 881 107D (the last letter is possibly not D -- if you find out the correct one, let me know).

he also asked whether I wanted to replace the passenger side rail although I haven't noticed it being loose yet). Total time from the problem being noticed to authorization for repair - 2hours 14 minutes. This confirms how important a good dealer and/or service manager is. Owning an Audi can be a good experience.

....specs" response and calls to AoA, and even showing the service writer (she was a newbie) the 1/4" travel when I dropped it off. Be persistent.
I miss the "old Park Place", now the only saving grace is Scott, who quickly assessed the seat problem and had it fixed as soon as he got back from vacation. Some dealers are good, some used to be, and some have only a handful of people who care out of the many they employ. Good luck.
