Its actually a metal forging technique that goes back about 3000 years. Ancient Chinese invented it.
The resulting metal structure is a lot closer to what you get with a forged wheel than a cast wheel.
FWIW, I've hit some multi inch deep Big Dig style craters here in Boston, no bends at all. I think there was a bad batch of wheels or something, these are significantly stronger than my Avus wheels were.

I've heard that about like six other kinds of wheels too...
I think its an urban legend. A few weeks ago someone was talking about some other wheel on here, and quoted a friend of a friend or something who said the team went through 30 sets of wheels and junked them.
I don't buy it.
