I've had the brake lights and annoying "beeps" for the past several months. I was sitting at work today thinking of how much of an idiot I'd be if I totalled the car this winter due to not having ABS. We've only had snow for the past few days but it's enough to get me motivated.
I know many people buy used abs control units and have no further problems. The downside is junkyards don't report mileages. If I pay $200-250 for a used unit there's a pretty good chance it could go bad in short order. After buying a second used unit I'd be up to around $500. I could've sent my control unit in for rebuild for $350 but I already got curious and tore it apart.
The audi dealer's list price is around $1200! I just ordered one for the "discount" price of approximately $1,000. The rubber plug kit was another $20, p/n 1H0 698 311 A.
While looking in my bentley manual I noticed a warning concerning abs units:
"During painting operations, the electronic control module can be exposed to a max. temperature of 95C (203F) for only a short period, and to a maximum of 85C (186F) for longer periods (approx. 2 hours). "
Hmm, what are the underhood temps? I bought some heat fabric from summitracing and plan on fabricating some sort of heat shield for my new $1000 ABS unit.
Why is it so much more painful to spend $1k on an ABS module vs. something like an aluminum flywheel??
If you've owned your car since before the warranty expired call audi usa. They told me I was out of luck because I bought the car already past the warranty period. They implied that if I owned it before the warranty expired they might've been willing to help with the ABS repair.

ever again!! I'm going to wrap mine up too when I get it, might as well wrap up the air box and oil lines while I'm doing that too. For the amount of money you spent you might as well add it in your sig as a modification!
