Justin T -- More on ESP
I read the article on RS4.org about ESP and note that there is a warning that ESP isn't going to overcome the laws of physics on slippery or icy roads. True. But the same is with quattro, traction control, etc. I've gone into 4-wheel drifts in the rain in my quattro. How? Over metal grates that vent the DC Metro system. If there is no grip, all 4 will slide. Same with ESP.
HOWEVER, it IS very good in snow (I have driven different A4 quattros on ice with ESP on and off) and ice. It is VERY good. You can drive an Auto-x type course with ESP on and not skid, whereas the same course driven with ESP off results in slides, skids, etc.
It's designed for snow and ice. And I say this only because I have had first-hand experience driving cars with ESP.
This isn't a flame. Just a response to our dialogue below.

Jon is right...
We had a chance to drive A4s with ESP at Audi's Winter Ice Driving class in January. You could turn it on and off, and it is incredible how much control you can retain while doing emergency evasion maneuvers using ESP. This feature is something you'd probably want turned off for track events, but for normal driving in slippery conditions it is a super feature.<p>John G

I gotcha Jon. When I read the clip from RS4.org, I was reading the part about deep (more)
snow. The clipping said it might hurt to have ESP on in deep snow. Otherwise, it did not say much of the usefulness of ESP in winter conditions. But I'll take yours and John G's word for it!!! We get our fair share of snow up here in Ohio, so any help on my 2001 will be great! Now I just have to wait and see what rubber is going to come on the 2001. Crossing my fingers that it is not the RE040s. Someone posted a rumor a while back that P7000SS were going to be the standard rubber. I wonder...
