Default I understand what the mech says, but I just can't seem to agree. Say I'm on an Audi lot to

test driver a few cars. I get into this one and I hear this whining sound from under the hood. I look at the car salesman and question him as to what that sound is. "Oh that, yea that's normal on these cars, some do it, some don't". I would then do one of two things. Call him a liar and move on to another car/dealership. Or believe him. I would have a hard time believing that a $30k-$40k car would have a "some do, some don't" sound. I'm not trying to make FAS4WD worried but it doesn't add up to me. Just my $.02.

I get the whine. Got more noticeable once I put in downpipes. I don't hear it over radio though.

Valid point. The tech explantion makes sense to me if clearances vary in manufacture.

the clearances can vary quite a bit and still be considered 'in spec' IIRC

Default 2nd (more)

My turbos seem to whine a little more than a few others, but nothing major. It is mostly based on outside temp and oil temps. As the weather is getting warmer here, I am hearing them less.

I think my turbos whine as much as quickaudi's S4, but not as much as my dads S4- they are both 2001.5's, and I am 2001.0, which I believe has a slightly different shaft/bearing setup.

I've heard no whine/siren from most B6 A4s (1.8T) (but ive only driven 2 extensively, however), while I've heard it on a 1.8T Jetta some of the time.

Oh and quickaudi's 5000T whined a LOT more than my 200.

Default You, sir, have apparently NEVER worked in the manufacturing world.

Granted, the turbos probably have tighter tolerances, but it's kinda like what that guy on Armagedon said, "Not to make you worried, but you're strapped on top of 1.5 million gallons of explosive being controlled by 200,000 moving parts that the gov't sourced to the lowest bidder."
We have some parts that have true positions and tolerances of over 1 millimeter. Can you imagine what your turbo blades' spec might be? Variance is always accounted for, obviously, but there's a reason that it's called variance. It means that the parts vary, plain and simple.
