Not sure if it is a bad ecu or n70 and I wanted to test ecu with a swap first. Is J swappable with L? I thought only AA & L were interchangeable.

Yes, they are interchangeble. You would get a CEL in a few hundred miles without a cluster recode.

I have an 2001.5 S4 avant tip that was just totalled for a side impact collision. I took it back from Geico because it's worth so much more than the salvage bid. Anyway, It still runs great and has an L box with APR chip which is matched to the large diameter downpipes and APR catback exhaust. The chip has been in and functional for 4 years, the exhaust I just upgraded a year ago.
I'm in LA. Are you interested in a full stage 2+ upgrade. I'll sell the whole set up for $1500 and swap your stock ecu and exhaust. This is probably much more than your looking for but I thought I'd give it a shot. Thanks for your time.
