Let's talk engine alternatives again - what are the possibilities for the 3.0L engine in our car?

that was quick, just got off the phone
so he is for sure getting a new motor, i told him that i am really only interested in the short block but would be willing to pick up the whole motor to take it off his hands. he is going to talk to the mech and see what they want to do. i plan to strip it down completly. if i build this thing its going to be 100% done right.
guy is so disgusted with it right now he said he would off the whole car like it sits for $4k, 2002 loaded 36k miles, was a tensioner that failed initialy leading to the t-belt going. did i mention that torn apart this motor looks identical to the 2.7/2.8 on the front. same water pump even. if i have time today i will swing by the shop and take some pics of the damage

I would love to see more photos!
Take a close look at the connecting rods and other bottom-end bits and pieces.
I'd say if you can pick up the car for $4K then it would be a steal and you should probably rebuild the engine to put back in that car. Should be relatively easy to rebuild the heads and replace the pistons/rods if necessary. Just a tear-down and rebuild.
But it doesn't stop this discussion being valid. We are going to start seeing a lot more of these engines with snapped timing belts due to mileage and front accident damage. Even if this particular block isn't available then there will be others.

i am not buying the car, if i did it would get a N/A 2.7t :p
I want the motor, the bottom end is still sitting in the car attached to the trans. so no more internal shots until its on my engine stand if i buy it.

The other issue is whether the spacing in the V is identical.
It should be. But if the angle of the v was slightly different then it would need custom work on the intake to make that fit.

There are no Alu E46 M3 production SB/engines out there. There was an issue at high rpms
that kept killing the bottom end. I do not know if it was stretch, detonation, bearings or what but the original pre-production engines were throwing rods under "track" testing. BMW released the production version with some issue that there were recalls on but those were all iron blocks.
