I'm not sure if anyone else has tried this but today I got sick of that black plastic mounting plate that the license plate bolts to. With my Audi Sport license plate frame the black mounting plate stuck out about a 1/4" below the frame and made the car look unfinished. So, I took the license plate and black mounting plate off the car and cut that 1/4" off of the bottom of the mounting plate. The whole process took only about 20min and the back of the car looks much better. I was going to have the black plate painted to match the body, but that still would have looked crappy sticking out from under the frame. This way everything lines up correctly and the frame doesn't look uneven. The only trick to this is to be careful when removing the black mounting plate because there is adhesive on the back of it. I didn't need to heat it like a badge, but I had to be careful not to get the adhesive all over the paint. Altogether I'm very happy with the outcome and highly recommend this mod to anyone who has the same problem. Sorry no pics yet.

I bought those same frames from Audi and returned them for the reasons you outlined. The stock mounting plate proportions seem odd to say the least.
