You might try the audio forum
If you use a driver other than the factory bose driver, it's not going to sound right due to the active eq in the amplifier.
Not sure if you're looking for a replacement or upgrade. If you just want a replacement, you might have better luck in the audio forum since speakers from an A4 will also work.

looking for anything but bose. Since I can't...
even listen to the radio with all the buzzing up front, I might just disconnect it till I have a chance to bring it in for regular service. Stupid... This is my 5th bose speaker in my 2001.
I prefer techno-like stuff, and it just can't handle the bass IMO. No desire to upgrade the head unit and go down that $$$ road.
Sounding better is not the goal. Sounding similar is good 'nuff for me.
What's the damage like if I put in some nice 4-ohm 'ers??

Another possibility
since going with a different driver is going to change the sound, perhaps you could tweak the built-in EQ to get rid of some of the bass up front. That should help reduce the excursion of the drivers. Search the tech articles on how to do this.
