Looking for one
Hello everyone. This is my 'newb' post, although Ive been reading up on here for quite some time. I just got rid of my e39 540 not too long ago, and looking for an awd car, my interests ended up with the B5S4. Ive read over all the common problems, fixes, etc., and I am for the most part a DIY guy. Anyway, my questions is the following - I have been looking for a 2000 or a 2001 S4 (6sp of course), and Ive seen a range from stock ones to slightly modified (APR chip, bpv, suspension, etc) go for about the same price. Most are at or real close to 100k miles. And most seem to be asking around $12k. Is that a fair price? Ive read that I should stay away from chipped cars, but if I am going to chip mine anyways, what's the difference? Any words of wisdom? Thanks!

Only $12K. Wow. Well most of us here probably don't like seeing such
low prices.... but... oh well.
My advice would be not to worry if it's chipped or not. Just make sure to find one that is well taken care of. Actually, I think one with mods that is well taken care of would be your best bet, but that would probably cost more.
My feeling is that if it's chipped and running well and strong and the little K03s aren't whining, I'd rather have that vs the same thing unchipped. Reason being that a car that seems fine stock may show issues when getting chipped that you had no idea were there...

As a fellow DIYer I'd say the maintenance on these cars isn't that bad. Just be advised that...
if you want to replace/upgrade the turbos that you would have to pull the motor. The rest of the repairs are pretty common and straight forward, just some times a PITA to do. You will save a ton of money by doing everything yourself and the forum archives here have a wealth of info.
I agree with S4gasm about a low mileage, newer one. It is worth the extra cost in the longe run. Good luck!

maintenance is key
Look for one with major servicing completed recently. Things like control arm kits, timing belts, o2 sensors, pads, rotors, aux water pumps etc. At that mileage you see alot of cars that are on the brink of neglection with owners trying to avoid investing in proper maintenance. Check the records and have a reputable shop perform a PPI. These cars are getting old enough where mileage isn't the only factor, preventive maintenance is, as well. I would be afraid of any B5 that hasn't had a timing belt at this point irregardless of mileage

Re: Looking for one
wow thanks for all the responses already. I'm really enjoying this forum! Seems like a very helpful place. Thanks again. BTW, Ive read that buyer's guide before (thank you though) but Im just having trouble figuing out what a decent price is in 2007 for a 2000-20001 100k mile S4 (body in great shape) - needs a timing belt, all other things done. I know about KBB values, but sometimes they just arent all that accurate when it comes to private sales. So the 12-14k range is a decent price??
