Default Looking to purchase snows for my stock rims. Advice please

Im a little warry putting snows on my 17 inch avus stock rims. But i think i am going to do it. I live in mass and might see a few inches at times, BUT i live on campus and it is rare that i HAVE TO DRIVE. I would however like to have confidence in my car.

I am planning on purchasing the appropriate sized Dunlop WinterSport M2's

1) What size tire do i want to put on the stock rims.
2) Is there a better tire out there? (if i am not buying winter rims i can spend a little more on the tires themselves)

2a) IF i get the BEST tires for 17" are they maybe better than descent tires would have been on 16's ???

Thanks for your time, i guess i should just call luke (will do that soon)

Default I run Blizzak Lm-22's in the stock size. (225-45 17's) They are great...

They get me up my 40 degree driveway with over a foot of snow on it with minimal slipage.

Default 225-45-17's for stock, I also have the Sport M2's and will put them on my Avus..

I went without snows last year and had a few close calls, I told myself that I'd never do that again. When I get my new car, It will have the Dunlop Sport M2's mounted!! It's a good investment, think of it as a little insurance. Purchased mine at Tirerack for about $640.

Default My answers......

1) What size tire do i want to put on the stock rims.

Either 225-45-17 or 205-50-17. The 205's will be a bit better in deep snow.

2) Is there a better tire out there? (if i am not buying winter rims i can spend a little more on the tires themselves)

The M2's are pretty darn popular on AudiWorld but they are a few years old (M3's were released in Europe this year). Also check out the Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22 (I have these), the Michelin Pilot Alpin and the Nokian NRW.

2a) IF i get the BEST tires for 17" are they maybe better than descent tires would have been on 16's ???

Maybe....too many factors to really say yes or no. The narrower tire will generally be better in deeper snow as it can "dig" down through the snow to bare pavement where a wider tire will have the tendency to "float" on top of the snow. I decided to downsize to 16's for the following reasons:

1) I kind of like the stock Avus rims and didn't feel the need to upgrade to 18's for the summer.

2) 16" rims will allow for a taller sidewall thus providing protection for the inevitable pothole hit (they sprout up like crazy around here in PA.)

Default

Just stick with an "H"-rated winter tire and you'll be fine.

Default Take it easy with em' and you should be fine. I put around 8,000 winter miles...

on my car and the Blizzaks wear just fine. Just make sure you get the LM-22's (H rated) so they will last longer.

Default I have 205/50/17 Pirellis; narrow is better in the snow...

and the handling is affected too much in the dry.

Default Numerous choices in stock size. Question is, what's left in stock @ Tire Rack or others dealers.

Good choices are:
Dunlop Wintersport M2
Michelin Pilot Alpin
Blizzak LM-22
Pirelli Snowsport 240
