...and I can't really speak to whether the Pilot Alpin's are better than the Blizzak LM-22's.
When I spoke with Luke from Tire Rack, he recommended the LM-22's to me as they are a bit better on ice than the M2's or Pilot Alpin's (I was considering those tires as well). Since we get ice storms here in the Philly area quite often I decided that ice traction was somewhat important for me, thus I went with the LM-22's.

...you must decide whether you want a "snow" tire or a "winter" tire. Then take it from there.
Good snow tires are Nokian Hakkas, Blizzaks, and many others.
Good winter tires are Michelin Alpins, Vredestein Wintracs, Dunlop Winter Sport M2's, and many others.
Something that might help you decide is availability. Some of the most popular tires in the most popular sizes are already sold out for the season. Figure out what tires you are interested in, and see if your dealer can even get them. Then decide from what's available.

I also live in mass and have 225/45/17 Nokian Hekk..NRW's for winter (on a second set of AVUS wheels.) Work great for me.
BTW-who hard wired your V1?

I know that 16's are better. I would like to go to 16's but i have 2 problems.
1) i kind of have a second set of stocks (from my unfortunate accident)
2) It was tough to find available 16 MM Spyders.
3) i did nto find any other 16 inch options that i liked. If there is a 16 inch wheel that people are using that i might like a picture would be great.
I think i am going to get 225-45-17's Blizzak Lm-22's. I think that the few times i drive in 1 inch of snow it will be ok. I do not have a commute. So i am not like a doctor that has to drive to the hospital in a snow storm. I live on campus and i can take the bus. I can always wait for the roads to be plowed, and its only really once a semester that i have a time where it is mandatory that i go home.
It seems 205-50-17's cause too much loss on dry durring the winter.
