If you lose 100 lbs, you can save $40/year!!! I guess nobody got the news flash that buying 5000lb SUVs = poor gas mileage as well. Sorry, just had to vent.

you meant to reply to the post below about the MIT article. Before slamming the MIT guys you might want to read the research paper that they wrote about their study, they did evaluate water as well.

this is a quote from them
"The higher pressures and temperatures of a turbocharged engine can lead to a problem known as knock, which occurs when the fuel and air in the engine explode prematurely, hurting performance and potentially damaging the engine.
Cohn said his group's technology avoids that problem by injecting ethanol into the engine when knock is likely to occur. The ethanol vaporizes and cools the fuel-air mixture, keeping it from exploding until the engine is ready.
"This is a very special feature of ethanol," Cohn said."
WATER IS BETTER AT COOLING
BUT you are right about me posting on the other one,i read both and just posting forgot they were different threads, but im still keeping it here

my prior post, you ought to read the report, <b>they did evaluate water</b>. The text below is an excerpt from the report.
<i>"The latent heat of vaporization of water is substantially higher than that of ethanol. 2260 kJ/kg for water, vs 850 kJ/kg for ethanol."
"To investigate the effect of the ethanol/water mixtures, the knocking calculations were repeated for 3 bar manifold pressure and beta = 0.3, 0.4 and 0.6 for the case water-ethanol mixtures with 7% weight water (16% molar). This water concentration corresponds to an increase in the latent heat of vaporization of about 14% per kg of mixture, 20% per J delivered by the antiknock agent. The knocking results indicate that the amount of ethanol required is decreased by about 0.04, or about 5%. The effect is thus about a third of that which would be expected from the mixture if the temperature change due to evaporative cooling were the only consideration."</i>
