Default M box vs. J ECU boxes

All...I have a M box (yeah a tip box) and I'm thinking of picking up a spare box in case my ECU shoots craps. Anyway will a J box work?

Also, when you replace the ECU's you have to re VAG each time, correct?

I checked search but haven't found squat about J boxes, this is the "new" ECU module I belive.
