Default M3 Wagon vs S4 Avant

OK Guys, no flames please. I am the proud owner of 00 S4 Silver/Onyx (currently in the shop for TBB repairs)and a 99 BMW 328i. I also have a 3 month old baby and 100pd labrador. In short, the backseat just does not cut it in either car. In other words...a wagon is on the way. Here is the dilemma...I am considering the following:

1) trade in the s4 for an s4 avant

or

2) wait for the m3 wagon (reported to be coming to the US by BMW and Autoweek)

Here is the dilemma:

It kills me to pay 43k for a car (the avant) that is at the end of its model life (restyle in 2002)...when I can wait til the end of 2001 for an m3 wagon at the beginning of its model life...

Thoughts?

Default Well, to begin with, the bimmer will start at nearly $50K...

...So, would you rather pay roughly $7K more for a fresh BMW or less for an equally great vehicle that's destined to be a classic, also? (FWIW: I'm basing my guesstimate of the M3's starting price on the current cost difference between the 528 and M5.)

Default I would really be surprised if the m3 wagon came here...

The wagon has only recently (2000 model I think, but maybe 1999?) come back to the US, and I don't think I have EVER seen one on the road. I wouldn't be surprised if there are more 5-series wagons than 3-series wagons in the US. For a car that is going to be in as much demand as the new M3 is, I would think that BMW would make the coupe first. I mean, BMW even stopped making the 4-door M3! I really can't see the wagon coming before the 4-door!

Default I think AutoWeek was talking about the M5 wagon…

One is planned to debut at the Paris auto show this fall. Although it was never imported, BMW offered an M5 wagon on the last generation 5-Series.

The M3 will launch as a 2-door coupe with a convertible following in about eight months. A half year or so after that, BMW is scheduled to launch a 4-door sedan for the North American market.

BMW has never offered an M3 wagon before, and if they hold to the production plan, the earliest anybody would see a factory supplied M3 would be the late summer of next year.

If ever.
2000 Nogaro/Silver - S4

Default That's because it is already one, sorta

It's supposed to be a stylish wagon...you can get it as a 5-door, I think
-Chicago Joe (2000 Laser Red S4M)

Default I said why not...

I cannot imagine that the wagon has any chance of coming here before the 4-door. And the last M3 had its 4-door cancelled. I guarantee that the M3 wagon will not come to the US until at least a year after the M3 4-door comes here. Of course, my guarantee isn't worth anything...

Default Viggen's a 9-3… Saab doesn't do a 9-3 wagon, the 9-5 is their first wagon since the 95
