Default Manual vsTiptronic

Does anyone run a Tiptronic on their S4? How does the durability compare to the manual? I know it is not quite as quick but can it handle the additional power from various upgrades? Thanks, Jon

Not without extensive modification will a tip reliably handle stage 3 torque figures

It would be cheaper to get a 6 spd than modify the tip.

Default Stage II+ is the MAX you can go on the stock tip trans

and even that is flirting with the line. I run APR as it doesn't have such high boost levels as some of the others. I believe a couple tuners have chip software specifically for the tip that lowers torque output to around 315...which is the "supposed" max the tranny can handle. But we all know how conservative Audi is because the stick does 0 to 60 in 5.9, right guys .

I've been chipped for about 20,000 miles now and have had 0 tranny issues (except for putting the TCM into a limp-mode once the other week with the exhaust+K-04s...yeah that was scary but harmless).

A couple of the tip folk have had their tips upgraded by a company called level 10 and are now in the process of Stage III upgrading. I can't recall their handles off hand (forgive me, you two).

The e-mail I got back from level10 claimed that with the upgraded tip, the car will perform better then the manual. That statement is open to flamage and that is what I was told not necessarily what I believe.

Default Yep running a full K04 program is inviting problems with stock tranny

lIke you said Level 10 is an option so that you can take full advantage of the power increase you get with K04's.
You can run a detuned program with the K04 making ~350hp and ~340lbs. Runs .9 bar. Gives decent performance while still being pretty mild. And probably less torque than most 1bar -1.2 bar chips for the K03's. Except maybe O.CT and the AMS chip. AMS runs ~310hp and 300lbs, I dont know the O.CT k03 numbers.

Default Let me say this again...

This is all in the archives, several times, but...

1) Torque, not horsepower kills drivelines. The Tip in the S4 is rated circa 310 ft/lbs of torque by its manufacturer; (ZF Intustries).

2) Based on the experience of the userbase here, the number from ZF is conservative. Many people run tuning chips that make in excess of 360 ft/lbs of torque. I have had an APR 5.0 chip and exhaust in place for about 30,000 miles. My transmission is FINE. Furthermore, several others run chips with downpipes, which makes additional torque. None of them have managed to blow a tranmission up either.

3) As far as I know, nobody has fried a Stage III type of upgrade on a Tip equipped S4, but several sixspeed owners have fried sixspeed clutches, with Stage III power. I think everyone rightly assumes that it will break, but nobody has chosen to make the experiment and take the risk.

3) A couple of people have taken a big bite, (myself included), and spent considerable money to reinforce the Tip gearbox, such that it will reliably handle Stage III torque numbers, and beyond. (Level10 claims that their upgrade is reliable to 800 ft/lbs of torque. Even if we assume this is 25% ambitious, 600 ft/lbs is beyond any Stage III, Stage IV, or Stage V offering on the market.)

I will be installing an APR Stage III kit, Labree downpipes, and AWE Intercoolers, plus a few additional toys as soon as my K04s are shipped. (Apparently Borg Warner has a two month backorder on these turbos.)

-Michael.

Default #1 is incorrect

You cannot smoke a clutch with only torque. You need a difference in rotational speed to do that, and that difference is by definition horsepower.

the TIP is superior to the stick in all areas!
