Default Marvel Mystery Oil

Added 1/2 quart to my oil (crankcase) to try and quiet down a noisy lifter. I've put 125 miles (mixed city/hwy) on since.

The noise has only grown louder - is this normal? Is it not supposed to quiet down until AFTER oil change? I was planning on running this Mobil 1/MMO for another 200 miles or so and then getting an oil change. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Default I also added some, and my slight lifter tick is almost completely gone.

It's been about 200 miles or so. I'm gonna go another 300 or so and then change the oil. Car sounds great though! I guess Mike knows his 2.7T's ;-)

Default Changing the lifters is the only solution. Lifters fail due to,

beside quality control or manufacturers issues, high mileage , infrequent oil changes and sometimes running the wrong oil viscosity. Adding snake oil is not a remedy.

Default Oil has been changed religiously - Ever 3K miles

Until this change where I'm letting it go 5k (first ever) - I'm at 97K miles.

Always Mobil 1 synthetic. Just one lifter for sure. It's pretty loud!

Default Depends on what the noise is...

It could get louder before it quiets if it's dissolving and dispersing lots of varnish and contaminents. It could also indicate damage, but in these cars I doubt it.

I would just run it for a few hundred more miles and see what happens.

If you engine is really dirty you might have to do a second 1/2 qt dose since the majority of the MMO will bond with the crap in your engine and be consumed by the engine, since it's contains benzene and mineral spirits... which burn-up pretty quickly.

Default Sorry, snakeoil will not save a collapsing lifter, engine oil brand

of choice is the solution for contaminent control not mystery potions with 1000 applications.

Have I tried it ? Yes and it has never helped , I ended up changing the lifters which is not that difficult of a job for the average DIY'er.

Default I guess a bunch of engines didn't get that memo: Do a search under "MMO".

You know, There is chemistry behind why it works.

Additive packages in most oils are quite gentle in comparision.

Oh, and I do agree that it's not a cure-all... but why not give it a shot before tearing into an engine?

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com</a

Default Search for Doug Hillary on Rennlist , that guy will talk oil

until your head smokes and IMO gives better info than bobtheoilguy. Try it and let me know what you think.

Default I'm sure...

But there's no harm in trying it for a few hundred miles. It freed up my noisy, sticky lifters (M1 btw) in that time around 20k miles ago, and they haven't made a peep since. If that's not the measure of an effective treatment, I don't know what is.

Default Sort of off topic but there is an aircraft engine (LYC 0320 H2AD) that rarely made it to TBO...

(time before overhaul) which is was set for 2000 hours. With the addition of MMO the engines are lasting much longer and regularly making it to TBO.
