I was looking through Motor Trend's road test summary, and there was a listing for the test of the Mercedes C36 (from 4/97). It has a 3.6L, 276 HP motor w/ torque of 284 ft-lb @4000, w/ a 5-speed automatic transmission:
0-60: 5.9 ; 1/4 mi.: 14.4@97.7 ; 60-0: 114 ft. ; lat. accel : .87g ; slalom: 66.5 mph
Results from MT's test of the S4:
0-60: 5.5 ; 1/4 mi.: 14.1@98.3 ; 60-0: 118 ft. ; lat. accel : .86g* ; slalom: 67.1 mph
* article text said .89, but summary in article (12/99) and summary in latest issue both say .86
Just FYI....oh, and the as-tested price of that Mercedes was $57,260(!)<p>'00 S4

I'm sure they get real good at full dragstrip launches on every car they test. I also wonder how many transmissions/clutches of theirs have failed at some point in the testing process.

"...the Audi surges forward with real authority, zipping to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds..." from Car and Driver's S4 vs. M3 vs. C43 AMG vs. Viggen comparison test.
I submit that those who replicate this test with any regularity won't be doing it for long! :-) Can you say "gear meat"?<p>'00 S4

shows the Tip running 6.6 0-60 and 15.1 1/4 mi. Do you have a guess how they launch to get this? they know how to use manuals and auto's, real people maybe not as good. Course with auto not too much to go wrong.

...which means that 0-60 auto times are more representative of what someone with an auto will get than the 0-60 manual times...not too many people are going to subject their drivetrains to 5000 RPM clutch-dropped launches (at least, not for very long! ;-)<p>'00 S4

Just b/c it's someone's job to do something doesn't mean they KNOW what they're doing. Look in the computer industry and all of the "consultants." The guys that write "technical articles" for magazines are even worse. Yet everyone takes their words as gospel. I've never figured that out. They are trashing these cars with their launch techniques.

Is to put foot on the brake, rev the car up to 3000RPM, then release the brake and floor the gas.
This has the added side benefit of revving up the turbos on the 2.7T.
Not great for your tranny, but if you do for a very short time and don't overhead the tranny, it's actually a lot better for your car then clutch dumping on a manual.
