25.3 avg mpg recently for the Golf vs
19.6 avg mpg for the S4
= 23% cheaper cost of gas
Driving 37,000 miles per year, with a gas cost averaging $3.00/gal, that works out to:
37,000/25.3*$3 = $4387/yr Golf
vs
37,000/19.6*$3 = $5663/yr S4
Savings of $1276/yr ($106/month) if I were to only drive the Golf and not the S4. At the rate I'm driving each, I'm probably saving $800-900/yr, which probably just offsets the cost of insurance and car taxes each year.
Nonetheless, it's worked out well as a 2nd car when the other is down, and for use driving to places I wouldn't want to take the S4. It's got great highway power (300wHP), so it's still fun, yet I have kept it stock looking so its easily parked on the streets of Boston or NYC and nobody will give it a second look, nor will I care if it gets a bump here or there...
Its worked out well...
