Mobil 1 0W-40, part number 98BB05. Where / why purchase it? . . . . . .
(**Be sure to read the 'Lubrication References' linked at the bottom of this page!**)
1) <b>FACT</b>: Mobil 1 0W-40 <b>IS</b> a 0W viscosity oil;
2) <b>FACT</b>: Mobil 1 0W-40 is <b>NOT</B> a 40W viscosity oil;
"In simple terms, a multi-viscosity oil, such as ()<b>0W-40, means that the oil will pour and flow like a ()0-weight oil at very low temperatures yet offer the same lubrication ability as 40-weight oil when the engine reaches operating temperatures</b>." (from the 'Lubrication References' link, below)
3) <b>FACT</b>: Mobil 1 0W-40 DOES NOT get thicker as it warms up;
"<b>A common misconception is that (the multi-viscosity) oil thickens to achieve a 40-weight status</b>. In fact, the oil simply maintains the same flow rate, film strength and shear rating as a straight 40-weight oil would offer at higher temperatures." (from the 'Lubrication References' link, below)
4) <b>FACT</b>: 5W-30 motor oil is THICKER than 0W-40 motor oil;
5) Audi now recommends (since the 2001 S4) 0W-30 as first choice of crankcase fill on an S4 oil change. Why? Perhaps because the 5W-30 recommended in 2000 S4 was too thick to lube the engine as well as a 0W-based multi-viscosity on cold starts? (If so, I don't expect them to recant their 2000 S4 recommendation in favor of their UPDATED 2001 S4 recommendation.)
Why didn't Audi recommend 0W-40? Probably because 0W-40 was not available in the US at time of printing of the Owner's Manual (and is still difficult to find, until just recently). 0W-40 is essential to protect our hot little turbos;

6) Where can you find Mobil 1 0W-40?
In Los Angeles, at Mobil Auto Lubes, in Vernon, CA 323/595-8491 ($30/6-pk) (Will-call Only)
In NorCal, at Interstate Oil Distributing, Sacramento/Woodland/Fresno, and Reno, NV
Other locations, look for Mobil Auto Lubes in your yellow pages (Mobil's oil warehouse network), smooze your Pep Boys or other auto parts store for the special order of p/n 98BB05, or call the local Porsche or MBz dealer to see if they have it on the shelf or can tell you where to get it.

The opinions in item #5 are MY opinions, based on actual meaning of the viscosity values of multi-viscosity oils.

Great info. M-Benz dealer now use Mobil 1 0W-40.
I just had my Benz serviced at Penske. They use Mobil 1 0w-40 on all of the 2000 and newer models during the flex-services -- free maintainance like Audi. I wish Audi would include Mobil 1 in its services.

Tiny little turbos with ballbearing cartridges, that will.....
be direct 'bolt-in' replacements for the stock KO3s (matching bolt patterns and fluid line mounting points), require less oil for lubrication, producing 22-25psi max boost (comparable to the KO4 Sport/SpeedVision turbos), with same spool-up time as stock KO3s.
Currently being developed, in the engineering / foundry stage right now. Test models by Sept 1!
I'll keep you posted of results on this forum.
