Mobil1 - OW-30, or 15W-50 Hot Houston Climate?
I saw the 15W-50 Mobil - It said it was for "High Performance Turbo or Supercharged Engines" - Anyone try it? Suggestions for Houston heat?
Thanks

I don't care what jyoteen says.. 15W-50 is just too thick for our cars
go with 0-40, 0-30, 5-30, maybe 10-30 if you are paranoid. Our cars have very tight tolerances and especially the turbo lines etc. I'm assuming that you change it every 5k. So the synthetic has not broken down by then anyway. Stick with something that flows all the time, even when the car is cold.
I track and autox and I have been running 5-30 in NorCal heat. Never a wimper from the valves.
It's like our cars with the 91 octane. It can handle it, but isn't the best. Stick with one of the lower. If Audi thought the car was built for thicker stuff they would say so. My 4K from the factory says either 15-50 or 20-50. $.02

Yah, don't mind what those crazy cosworth engineer's over at the Champion Audi S4 race team say ....
our oil line tolerances are too tight?
Biggest joke I've seen on this board in a while.
Audi does spec 15W-50 in the manual for euro S4's and the RS4. Something thin protects the turbos from guys who get on it too early.
For ultimate protection, the cosworth engineers with champion say to use 15W-50, period. Obviously we're talking in 45F + situations, but as a summer oil, I'll take their recommendation.

Well if you bang the rev limiter all the time.. and you can tear the engine apart after every race
go for it. But if you notice that we also get better mileage with the thinner oil. And the car runs cooler for most. Those are the signs I like to see. Not everything from the racing world can be carried over to us.

I'm now leaning towards the 15w50, as well. jyoteen and few others were privy...
to something most here were not. Out of the many oil discussions on this board over the last year (since I came aboard), I don't remember anyone pushing 15w50 until VERY recently (from jyoteen and MikeS).
I'm running 0w40 right now and notice oil temps are down just a bit from 0w30 (~5-10deg). When I picked up the M-1 0w40 form the Porsche dealer, I noticed cases and cases of 15w50 in the back! Before the summer's out and for subsequent summers, it's 15w50 for me.--makes sense, given how hot our cars run. All my opinion/deduction.

I'm not "pushing" the use of 15w50. It's what I use because LA weather...
is rarely below 75 degrees F, and as high as a 110 during hot valley summers. Plus, there is a lot of stop/go traffic, and things get hot fairly quickly. I also warm up the car before taking it above 3K rpms when cold. I follow this "rule" religiously. The oil temp is gotta be above 180 deg F if I'm going to be going past 3K rpms.
I'm not an oil religion guy. My VW uses dino oil from day 1. I AM the type of guy that believes in the if it ain't broke, don't fix it camp.
And because I track fairly regularly, I use higher viscosity oil. I couldn't tell you the technicality of why, I just do upon some other person's suggestions.
I think in the grand scheme of things, I bet it doesn't make a bit of difference.
