More break-in debate. What's the difference?

how different is my engine at 100mi than 1,000mi such that my engine could be damaged if it is reved beyond 4,500rpm?

Lugging the engine and WOT are bad. The main difference is wear and seating when it's new there is more heat from more friction. Breaking it in is basically to help all surfaces mate well.

they used to say that the cylinder walls and other parts were still a bit rough, but tolerances have improved dramatically over the years. that's why you used to want to change oil at early miles (get rid of any metal shavings, etc. from the early wear/break-in.
regardless, i think it helps some of the parts "mate" a bit better. i drove pretty easy til about 500 miles and then gradually increased rpms and speed. it shouldn't be an off/on at 1,000 miles where now you drive "regularly", IMHO
