but the 1st number is what it is like cold, and the 2nd number is what it is like hot, right?

Default Yep .. 0W-40 has the 0 of the 0W-30 and the 40 of the 5W-40. Perhaps 0w-40 wasn't readily

available in the US when the 01.5 manual was printed.

Default Molasses, I heard you're supposed to stay away from 15W-50 on the S4

I used to run it on my K04'd A4, but my dealer is real ancy about me using anything that heavy since my cam tensioner failed...they think the cold viscosity was too high so it was starving the tensioner on startup...sounds like bull**** to me but whatever.

If anyone wants a case of 15W-50, the old stuff...I have a fresh box here I'll let go for $20.

Regards,

James R.

I can't in good faith put that in my motor when 15W and 50 are both higher than Audi recommends.

Default I can't believe we are still on this...AUJ, read the manual. NO WHERE does it say you need to keep

a small viscosity delta (a term I think you made up, by the way). It does however (clearly) state that oil for the 2.7T must meet both API SJ and ACEA A2 or API SJ and ACEA A3.

This is a matter of understanding the english language, nothing more. You clearly cannot grasp what is being said in the manual, and that is fine. That's why you have us to help you along. English is a difficult language, but if you really, really try, you too can learn it. What you classify as my "feeble interpretation" of the manual is actually nothing more than a paraphrase of what is clearly and plainly written. I'm not about to diagram the sentences for you, pick up a decent grammar book if you are really interested.

Keep using what ever oil you want in your motor, but for the love of God, stop trying to pursuade people with legitimate questions about oil into thinking that 0W-30 is the best oil, per OEM specs. That is YOUR interpretation of the manual. At least, be honest and inform then that when they use 0W-30 Mobil 1, they are using oil that does NOT meet the specs clearly outlined in the manual. I'm so sick of this argument, but I'm not going to let you spew this crap. Give it a rest.

API = American Petroleum Institute, ACEA = Association des Constructeurs Européens d' Automobiles

Yes, the smaller the delta the more predictable the viscosity change with heat.

*YAWN* Yeah, whatever. It clearly states 3 recommended viscosity ranges and none are 0W-40.

Default I don't think it is about predictible, it is about the properties

with a cold engine and with a non-cold engine.

I am no engineer, but I think that based on the audi recomendations of all 0 and 5 low numbers, that is the critical number.

The high number is less critical for a couple of reasons

1) as the oil breaks down, it gets to eb a lower number, right?

2) there does not seem to be an issue with damage to warm turbos
