Default Which is more reliable 2002 B5 S4 or 2004 E46M3

I figure some opinions will be biased, but be as honest as you can.....

consider an 8 year life span for the car

Default <flame suit on> Genrally speaking, normally aspirated cars are considered

more reliable than cars that use forced induction. Having said that, the E46 M3 engine is a pretty strung out engine in stock form- you aren't going to get too much more out of that engine tuning wise (unless you slap on a supercharger). Audi's engineering philosophy is on LOW pressure turbos. If you do decide to mod the S4, you can get great gains per $$$ (just boost the engine internals to compensate). But in either case, both will cost $$$ to maintain. These are not Honda Accords or Toyota Camrys. As it is said numerous times on this board, you have to be willing to pay to play. Both are great cars. I personally prefer the S4. It is a more practical car, costs less, has all-wheel drive, and you don't see too many of them around (even here in Silicon Valley).

Default well, you read such great things about the

2.7l 6 cylinder engine used for our cars and yet you hear so many horror stories of blown turbos (I know the 2 are mutually exclusive) the 2 seem to pretty much equal each other out.

but you would figure someone out there would make a more reliable turbo ( I know lots of user error too)...ugh

that being said....I really like the E46 as a WHOLE of the S4....too many ticky tacky things go wrong with S.

Default depends on what you mean, but you'll see more S4 love on this board but more self deprecating

comments about the S4 too. its a love/hate thing.

Default stock turbos can suck ***. YMMV. i'be been lucky so far.

replace the turbos with KO4's or better and you are all set in that regard. that doesn't mean you wont' have potentially other problems, but that is the biggest big ticket item. early 6 speeds had weak synchos too.
