Which is more reliable 2002 B5 S4 or 2004 E46M3

blown turbos. Logically speaking, if Audi really experienced consistent problems w/ that engine, they should stop using it. But they're still using it in the 2005 Allroad. In my humble opinion, I think the problem with the Audi S4 is that it is so easy, tempting, and cheap to modify. It's also easy to get "carried away". Hanging around AW definitely doesn't help. =D Just remember that a E36 M3 Supercharger kit from Dinan costs ~$6000 and a E46 S1 M3 kit is over $7000. You can do lots of stuff w/ an S4 with that kind of money.

I would not own an SMG M3 out of warranty because I cannot even imagine what it cost to fix since no one knows how to fix them but the stealership.
I happily own an S4 out of warranty - just need to do some stuff yourself.
The S4 motor seems pretty bullet-proof - not too many have exploded - can't say that about the M3.
Now, with the bearing recall on the M3, may not be as much of an issue.
FWIW, I have both and prefer my S4.
