I did some research and this is what I found:
The 6-speed manual tranmission (AWD) is an 01E code. This transmission was initially introduce in 1992 as a 5-speed transmission (for the UrS4). In the late 90's another gear was "added" to this tranmission but the internals stayed the same.
Both the 01A and 01E have (and always will) use a GL-4 fluid. These tranmission have syncro rings made of brass that require the GL-4 spec fluid. On top of that the transmissions do not produce the internal pressures that require a GL-5 spec fluid.
Use GL-4, that's what these trannies have used for over a decade now.

http://tech.bentleypublishers.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6168</a

Take a look at the BOBISTHEOILGUY thread.
Seems all of us may be using unapproved oils in the transmission.
So is VW 501.50 what we need? I found some oils which claimed to be VW501.50 but also only claimed GL4.
