I think all this headache just says to stick with stock.

For example, Texaco GEARTEX S4 75w/90 claims GL4 but not GL5 and also claims 501.50 (see the link). Do a search for VW 501.50 and you will find other brands.

I don't know the difference really but FWIW, when I did a rebuild of my trans, I used Castrol Systhetic that was equal to the dealer recommended TAF-X (~$15qt). I live in Wisconsin, so I felt the OEM was the better choice over the Motul becuase of the cold weather. The car, though it now has a new owner, shifts great to this day.
