Only problem is ... while Motul is a so-called GL4/5 oil, it isn't VW 501.50 approved. :-p

Default And what gear oil is VW 501.50 approved? From what I read, VW 501.50 roughly = dual rated GL4/5

I think all this headache just says to stick with stock.

Motul is at least better than a GL-4 Redline oil :-P

Default I found a few that claim VW 501.50 approval. Not all claiming GL5 either...

For example, Texaco GEARTEX S4 75w/90 claims GL4 but not GL5 and also claims 501.50 (see the link). Do a search for VW 501.50 and you will find other brands.

Sounds like VW 501.50 *might* be GL4/5 but GL4/5 isn't necessarily VW 501.50.<ul><li><a href="http://www.texaco-online.co.uk/index.html?lub4.html">Texaco UK</a></li></ul>

Default Gotta love all the obscure VW ratings huh? I love how 505.00 is one thing and 505.01 is something

completely different.

Then there's 503.00 503.01 502.00 504.00 507.00

etc
etc
etc

fvck vw

I don't know the difference really but FWIW, when I did a rebuild of my trans, I used Castrol Systhetic that was equal to the dealer recommended TAF-X (~$15qt). I live in Wisconsin, so I felt the OEM was the better choice over the Motul becuase of the cold weather. The car, though it now has a new owner, shifts great to this day.
