Default My car makes a loud slapping sound when cold upon startup...
like a "clackety clack" sound, sounds like the fan belt but I'm not too sure, it has a little over 50K on it now, and I replaced everything at 40k(timing belt, water pump, accessory belts, power steering pump). The sound goes away completely as soon as it's up to temperature...sound familiar to anyone? any thoughts?

What weight oil are you using? Sounds like valve-lash adjuster tap.

Default same prob... i was also suspecting the fan, i use M1 0-40...
so i dont think its that but he basically described the same problem...

Default that's most likely your problem. RP is crap.
I had valve-tick and if you pushed the car hard, the valvetrain sounded like a Cummins diesel.

Switched to Mobil 1 and never looked back.

As I thought: Change that shiz out to a 0 or 5w oil. These engines love M1, FYI.

May want to check the cam adjusters...they can make that noise.

Default Hmmmmm..well I do have those sportec intake cams
which are pretty much overpriced RS4 cams, but why would that create a noise like that, then go away?

Default I just talked to someone the other day about this. Was it you?
What you have described is nearly verbatim what the shop manual says is the symptom of debris in the oil check valves for the upper end of the motor.
