Default My clutch problem has been diagnosed:

First off, my slave cylinder was leaking noticeably and has been replaced. That only helped the situation. What the real culprit was to my problems was a coolant leak. A coolant leak that would find its way into the bell housing and contiminate the kevlar lining of my clutch (which must remain free of contaminates to work properly). Now I've got to get the clutch lining resurfaced (it's nearly new) and get that coolant hose replaced (it's the one that is circled).

My previous post wondering what is wrong

Default Ooh, nasty. Would Spec S3 be a better choice for an upgrade then?

Way too many places for coolant to leak on these cars. Wouldn't have thought about the kevlar soaking...

Default Smell, occasional drippings on the garage floor (I don't use the engine undertray though)...

...and the puddling coolant is visible on top of the engine between the driver's side BPV and the throttle body. It probably started leaking like this since late summer, slowly getting worse. This also explains why a new clutch going in 3 months ago seemed to work fine for a month -- it took that long for the new kevlar lining to get contaminated enough to cause problems. The leak back then was not bad enough to be visible on the bell housing and on the clutch lining like it is this time.

Default Isn't it a little odd that the fluid found it's way inside the bell housing?

I've never pulled the trans before, but I would think it should be fairly well sealed...maybe not water tight, but tight enough that dripping fluid would just go to the ground rather than find it's way into the bell housing.

Does the source of the leak appear to be normal wear and tear, or the result of a little "brute force" when removing or reinstalling the engine during the stage III install?

yikes...pretty crappy consequences for a simple leak.

Default I thought that at first too. Mike said he'd take some pics tomorrow and email them to me...

...his shop is too far away from me to just casually stop by and see for myself.

Guess that's why OEM spec was an organic clutch.

Default with my jetta, the bellhousing had a clutch wear inspection hole.

the hole had a simple plastic cap. dunno what the s4 bellhousing looks like, but perhaps fluid entered though a similar access point.

I wouldn't reinstall the contaminated clutch lining. May be soaked through and through.
