Default My engine is fvcked. Blackstone oil analysis --> coolant in oil. Help! (esp DAP & LI-S4)

The story: Car has been consuming coolant for about 1-2 months. I should have done this analysis earlier. Leaky rear main was replaced 3 months ago, along with turbos, clutch, mm's. Since then, I've spotted *no* leaks. Engine has gotten noticeably noisier (degraded oil presumably) and I hear a high-pitched noise that comes and goes under >5psi - sounds like its coming from the drivers side (turbo?). Is it possible for oil & coolant to mix at the turbos? Where else can it mix other than RMS & head?

Am I crazy considering tackling this myself?

Default very very rare for coolant to get into the oil passages via the turbo

i don't think i've ever seen it with our cars.

Default

Does it necessarily have to be leaking externally to leak internally?

Default Damn! That's worse than mine was after ~4,300 miles.

I only saw about 1.1% coolant in mine.

The only other place that I am aware of aside from the headgaskets and RMS where oil and coolant are in close proximity is the factory oil cooler.

You can bypass that pretty easily to see if thats the problem but it doesn't seem too likely.

I'm tackling mine myself, and I don't see why you couldn't either. Just as a worst case warning, if its not the headgasket, RMS or oil cooler, you could be looking at a cracked head or block.

Default No. It could have failed between one or more of the oil and coolant passages w/o having an external

leak.

Default afiak the oil galleries and water jackets are totally seperate in the CHRA - no possibility of

mixing.

other possible problem areas include:

-oil heat exchanger
-head gasket
-warped head
-lifted head / stretched headbolt
-cracked block, presumably at the rear web
-rear main seal

Default I've compiled some info on this, see link inside. I lieu of even

more costly diagnostic work then I'd gone through trying to resolve it I went the cheap route and put Bar's Leaks in my coolant. That was back in June. I haven't lost coolant since and the motor hasn't blown up.

Coolant in oil info

Default Jacob, I know you are well respected for building turbos, but I vehemently disagree..

this is my 2nd turbo car in which turbo failure caused excessive coolant to disappear. Under normal use, obviously, you'd never have to add coolant. When the turbo lady sings and you drive for several thousand miles, my experience is that the coolant reservoir emptied itself over those several thousand miles.

Now, maybe I'm the wild one that shouldn't have driven my car continuously when I knew the turbo was on it's way out, but I did.

And, maybe that's a clarification that needs to be made. I drove my car many miles beyond what any other enthusiast would drive and all with a bad turbo. And, at the conclusion of that experiment, I unexpectedly had to fill up the reservoir with coolant.

There was no oil mix with water in this instance, only loss of coolant.

Default And anyone who has had this problem should follow my lead and

file a complaint with the NHTSA, link below. Enter this OID number to bring up my complaint. 10159801

This clearly is not an isolated problem, and I'd like to see AoA do like they did with the A4 sludge problem and extend the warranty on these motors.

NHTSA - Office of Defects Investigation
