The engine in the Audi is virtually bulletproof. I have yet to hear of a single blown engine. Under warranty, when a turbo goes, Audi backcharges the manufacturer of the turbo. Therefore, the cost lost is only in labor, which in most cases, is also absorbed by the turbo manufacturer.
Out of warranty is another story, that cost is out of the consumer's pocket.
This is how almost any company that gets parts or componets from a vendor operates.
When an engine blows, like in the few cases of M3s, the cost is entirely to BMW because that is their engine, not a vendor's.

I understand that replacing Turbo's is cheaper than the whole motor, the point was aimed at longer term justification, that chances are higher that you will have an associated part failure at an out of warranty period than with a normally aspirated motor
Like it or not, forced induction motors on a strictly percentage bases will not last as long as normally aspirated motor BMW or Audi.

look at the 5Cyl turbo that Volvo bought from Audi, and the 1.8t that VW/Audi has been so successful at. sure eventually it may go, but most people have gone onto another car long before any problems will happen. If turbos are not good, why would the RS6 be heading here? You would think that if Audi was concerned about turbo failures, they wouldn't even consider putting 2 on an 8cyl, don't ya think?
