my stock front brake pads appear to be flaking around the edges...

will the dealership replace these under warranty?
I had the rear pads and rotors replaced last week but the dealership said the front were within spec. The car had new rotors and pads all around for about 500 miles, but the thieves must've run it really hard because the brakes seem to be worn down.
Any reason the rear would be more worn than the front?
so, anyhow, I'm bringing the car to a different dealership to attempt to get the front replaced as well...they're really squeaky, beyond the 'normal' brake noise.

I had the same problem. The brakes created a vibration above 80 mph when I slowed down and squealed horribly at low speeds. Replacing them fixed the problem, so I'm sure your situation is similar.

22k miles, but didn't replace the pads because they were "OK" per dealer. The worn pads immediately flaked/chipped at the leading edge of the pads on both wheels during breaking-in of the new rotors. As for the rear pads being worn before the front, it could be one of two things: 1) joy-riders used the handbrake to do rear-wheel lock-up induced spins, or 2) your brake bias is set too much towards the rear. I don't think the bias is adjustable, but my rear pads look like they will end up wearing out before the fronts on my car - no track days or handbrake antics - and the rear rotors are definitely going to be worn below min thickness pretty soon (I'm at 27k now).
VW had some bad rear pads that were super soft back in 2000 or 2001 and issued a TSB. My wife's car wasn't included in the TSB, but she had some bad rear pads. I ended up having to replace them and the fronts still have more than 50% of OEM thickness left! Could be similar situation with bad lot of pad material from the supplier.

covers you for 4 yrs/ 50k miles; IIRC. This is the part of the warranty that covers any wear items; the factory warranty only covers defects and the like. Thus you have two separate warranties with different coverage - it's explained in the warranty booklet with a table showing which warranty covers which items during years 1-4 of ownership.

and I got the "that's normal" line too. I have NEVER seen another set of pads flake like these, and it's kind of worrisome. Mine's at the dealer having the brakes looked at.
