Default Mysterious idle issue...

2000 S4,73k miles, plugs were just replaced. As far as I know...the EGT sensor, coil packs, o2's and MAF are all original. I've always had a persistant stumbling idle (lightly). On a few occasions (3 time over the past year) the idle has gone extremely "lumpy" and started acting very eratic, almost to the point of stalling. This scenario happend last night. Today the idle is fine.

MAF?

Thanks.

Any 2000 with 73,000 miles has to have a jacked-up MAF at least.

Default Try cleaning your throttle body, it probably has carbon buildup.

The buildup makes air metering very inconsistent when the throttle is nearly closed.

Throttle Body has been cleaned recently. So perhaps I should pick up a new Bosch MAF?

Just called IMPEX and can get BOSCH for 120$ new. I hear it's prone to failure though??

Default Worth a shot, try tapping the maf body at idle, if your idle changes or the car stumbles, it's bad.

Even if it doesn't stumble, it could still be bad Given your mileage, if it's the original maf, it's time for a new one.

Bosch is your only option for a MAF unless you convert to a M box ecu and rewire for Hitachi.

What is/was the downside to the BOSCH? Prone to failure?

Yep. Pretty much. It's a better meter, overall, but less reliable
