RADAR only measures speed accurately with 180 degree or thereabouts location delta. Thus, there can be no accurate measurements from "the sides" unless the difference in angle from 180 is known in advance. Assuming a moving car, the angle changes and so the speed reading obtained is wrong. Fortunately for the motorist, the error in in our favor in that the speed read will be reduced as the angle of approach varies from 180 degrees.
As it approaches 90 degrees, virtually all resolution is lost.
In other words, traffic RADAR measurements from the sides are a non-starter.

if this 'new system' had a way of tracking bearing shift then it would be able to determine the car's speed from any aspect.<p>2001 S4
